On Day 2 of the opening test match, Joe Root scored a career-best 200 not out and England immediately declared their first innings at 575 for 9 against Sri Lanka on Friday.
But Sri Lanka came up with a strong response, with Kaushal Silva leading the visitors to 140 for 1 at the close of play with an unbeaten 62. However, the fellow opener Dimuth Karunaratne got out at 38 leaving his team at 54 for 1. Afterwards, Kumar Sangakkara continued with his good form and made 32 not out at the close of the day.
