FC Edmonton's Rein Baart was sent off for the second time this season against the Montreal Impact Saturday afternoonIt’s probably safe to say that at this point in the season, the Montreal Impact have FC Edmonton’s number.

Just over a month ago, the Impact came into Edmonton and handed the home team its biggest loss of the season (5-0 on May 1). It was a similar story on Saturday night in Montreal as FC Edmonton’s goalkeeper Rein Baart was shown a straight red for handling the ball outside of the box – the second time Baart has been ejected this season, the first time was against the same Impact side on May 1.

From start to finish it was all Montreal.

FC Edmonton committed three fouls in the first five minutes, each of them in a dangerous spot. Baart was forced to make two or three big saves in the first half but he couldn’t stop Montreal’s Mignane Diouf from opening the scoring in the 34th.

The score remained 1-0 going in to the half and FC Edmonton still had a shot at going home with at least one point.

But the second half brought much more of the same. The Impact were able to control the play and keep possession of the ball for the majority of the match and in the 80th minute, Baart was sent off.

The resulting free kick from just outside the 18 bounced around the box and ended up on the foot of Montreal’s Philippe Billy who made no mistake in firing the ball past Lance Parker who had been in the game for all of one minute.

The Impact were unlucky not to extend their lead before the final whistle, hitting the post on a 2-on-0 break but in the end, it was Montreal’s day from start to finish.

FC Edmonton return home on Sunday and will take on first place Carolina RailHawks at Foote Field on Friday night.
