The Canadian Soccer Association has nominated its women’s football roster to the Canadian Olympic Committee for the Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011. Newly-hired football coach John Herdman will have 17 players in red and white for the Women’s Football Tournament which runs 18-27 October.
Canada will be in defence of its football bronze medal starting 18 October. It will play Costa Rica, Argentina and Brazil in three group matches. The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-final stage on 25 October and then the semi-final winners advance to the championship final on 27 October.
Coach Herdman’s 17-player lineup features eight players with previous experience at the Pan American Games. That group includes Christine Sinclair, who in 2007 led the team with eight goals in six matches.
In 2007, Canada won women’s football bronze following a 2:1 victory over Mexico. Canada previously won women’s football silver in 2003 and finished fourth in 1999.
This also serves as Herdman’s second camp since taking over the Canadian team. Of the 17 players selected for this camp, six are new having missed the September series in USA.
The Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011 will help serve Canada’s preparations towards next year’s London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Canada’s qualification tournament takes place in January 2012 in Vancouver, BC.
