CONCACAFCCL returns today

The CONCACAF Champions League resumes today, when defending champion Monterrey travels to Morelia for the first-leg of its all-Mexican quarterfinal clash.

Morelia continued as the Mexican Clausura leader with a 3-0 away win over Queretaro. Rafael Marquez Lugo, Miguel Sabah and Edgar Gerardo Lugo scored to give the Monarcas their fifth-consecutive win and extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.

Monterrey fell 4-3 to Cruz Azul in Mexico City. Humberto Suazo scored his second goal in two games for the Rayados, who sit fifth in the league table.

On Wednesday, Toronto FC will host the LA Galaxy in front of a sold-out crowd of 43,500 at Rogers Centre.

In Florida, Toronto lost 1-0 to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final of the Disney Pro Soccer Challenge on Saturday. The Canadians had had defeated FC Dallas on Thursday to reach the tournament’s final.

The LA Galaxy travel to Toronto after winning the preseason Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Arizona. The Galaxy defeated the New England Revolution on penalties 4-2, following a 0-0 tie in the final of the tournament.

Also, on Wednesday, the Seattle Sounders host Santos Laguna at CenturyLink Field.

Santos returned to its winning ways in Mexican domestic action on Saturday with a 5-2 rout of visiting San Luis. Oribe Peralta scored four goals for the Guerreros, who are now in fourth place with a 5-2-2 record.

Seattle knocked off Mexico’s Jaguares 2-0 at home in its final tune-up on Wednesday. Fredy Montero scored both goals for Sigi Schmid’s side.

The week closes out on Thursday, when Pumas travels to El Salvador to face Isidro Metapan.Pumas snapped a six-game winless streak in Mexico on Sunday, beating host Toluca 2-0. Efrain Velarde and José Antonio Garcia scored the goals for UNAM, who moved up to 11th place in the league standings.

Metapan maintained its unbeaten streak in El Salvador with a 1-1 tie against Luis Angel Firpo on a late goal by Mark Lester Blanco. After 10 matches, Metapan is four points ahead of second-place Firpo.

 

Canada, Mexico, U.S. and Panama advance in U-20 Women’s

Canada will face host Panama and the United States will face Mexico semifinals of the 2012 CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship this Friday.

The U.S. defeated Panama 6-0 tonight to finish with a perfect record in Group B and set up a meeting with rival Mexico in the semifinals.

Panama finished with six points after wins against Guatemala and Cuba and will look for its first trip to a U-20 Women’s World Cup on Friday.

Canada defeated Mexico 1-0 on Monday to win Group A and will meet the Group B runner-up on Friday. The Canadians were perfect through three games, outscoring its opponents 8-0.

Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-1 and Haiti 10-0 before losing to the Canadians to claim 2nd place in Group A.

Jamaica and Haiti both finished with one point after playing to 0-0 draw on Monday.

Guatemala left Panama with a 5-2 win over Cuba on Tuesday.

The two winners of Friday’s semifinals will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan later this year.

The two losing teams will meet on Sunday in the third-place to determine the confederation’s final berth.

U.S. tops Mexico in Frisco friendly as teams continue Qualifying preparations

In a match-up of two CONCACAF sides, the United States beat Mexico 2-0 last Wednesday at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Juan Agudelo (35′) and Mix Diskerud (36′) scored for the Americans.

Mexico will face Senegal on March 17 in San Francisco in its final preparation match.

Trinidad & Tobago will play two friendlies in Jamaica before heading to Fort Lauderdale for a training camp.

On Wednesday, it will face Jamaica’s U-23 side in Kingston and will play a Jamaican club team two days later. While in Florida, it will meet Canada and U.S. club Orlando City.

Canada will hold its own camp from March 13-20, also in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

El Salvador announced that it will hold a training camp in Houston from March 9-20. The Cuscatlecos will play against Honduras on March 17 in the Texas city.

 

U.S. beats Italy for first time; Costa Rica, Jamaica and Trinidad are victorious

The United States made headlines on Wednesday, beating European power Italy in Genoa on a second-half goal by Clint Dempsey. It was the first-ever win for the Americans over Italy.

Costa Rica was also victorious, defeating host Wales in Cardiff, 1-0, on a 6th minute goal by Joel Campbell.

Visiting Jamaica won 3-2 over New Zealand on Wednesday in Auckland. Xavian Virgo, Tramaine Stewart and Navion Boyd scored a goal apiece to give the Reggae Boyz their third win in a week.

Jamaica’s Caribbean counterparts Trinidad & Tobago won 4-0 away to Antigua & Barbuda. Devon Jorsling scored three goals for the Soca Warriors.

Mexico fell 2-0 to Colombia in Miami also on Wednesday. It was only the second loss for El Tri under coach Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre.

Goals by Samuel Zenon and Fabien Beral gave Guadeloupe a 2-1 win over host Martinique in an international friendly at Le Lamentin’s Stade Georges-Gratiant on March 3. The victory was the first for the Gwada Boyz since finishing second at the 2010 Digicel Caribbean Cup.

Elsewhere, Tiran Hanley’s goal ended St. Kitts & Nevis’ four-game winless streak with a 1-0 triumph against visiting Antigua & Barbuda at Warner Park Stadium in Basseterre.

Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Kitts & Nevis are in preparations for the 2012 Digicel Caribbean Cup, while Antigua & Barbuda is gearing up for the resumption of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying in June.

In other results, Canada lost 3-1 to Armenia in Cyprus; Honduras fell 2-0 to Ecuador in Guayaquil, Ecuador; host Paraguay beat Panama 1-0; and El Salvador fell 2-0 to Estonia in Los Angeles.

U.S. falls in to Japan at Algarve Cup; will face Sweden for third

In a rematch of last year’s World Cup final, the United States women’s team fell 1-0 to Japan on Monday in its final group stage match at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. Megumi Takase’s second half goal handed the Americans their first loss of 2012.

The Americans will face Sweden on Wednesday in the tournament’s third-place match.

Canada loses to France in Cyprus Cup final

Canada fell 2-0 to France today in the final of the 2012 Cyprus Cup. Canada had beaten Scotland (5-1), Italy (2-1) and Netherlands (1-0) to reach the final.

It would have been the third straight Cyprus Cup title for the Canadians.

 

Costa Rica, Guatemala win pair of friendlies

Goals from Jorge Arias, Alejandro Paniaqua, Yefrid Ruiz, along with an own goal from Mexico’s Giovani Lopez, gave host Costa Rica a 4-0 victory in the first of a two-game series encounter at Heredia’s Palacio de los Deportes on February 29.

Two days later, at the Gimnasio Nacional in San José, Edwin Cubillo scored twice, while Arias, Erick Brenes, Jose Guevara and Paniagua each added a goal, in a 6-0 triumph for the Ticos, who posted their seventh-consecutive win over the Tricolores.

Elsewhere, two goals each from Jose Carlos Mansilla and Rafael Gonzalez led Guatemala to a 6-1 victory against host Mozambique at the Maputo’s Pavilhao da Academica on February 25. The Chapines completed the two-game sweep with a 2-1 win the next day.

The CONCACAF teams are preparing for the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship later this year in Guatemala, where four teams will qualify to the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand.
