CONCACAFMonterrey and Santos face off for CCL title 

The 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League final, to be played over two legs, will kick-off Wednesday, April 18, when defending champion Monterrey hosts Santos Laguna. A week later Santos will welcome its northern Mexican rivals to Torreon.

The series will feature five of the eight top scorers in this year’s competition, including Santos’ Herculez Gomez and Oribe Peralta, who are joint top scorers at six goals each with Jorge Barbosa (Herediano) and Joao Plata (Toronto FC).

To reach the final, Monterrey defeated Pumas (4-1 on aggregate) and Santos got past Toronto FC (7-3 on aggregate) in the semifinals.

Monterrey approach the first leg on a high-note after a 2-0 win over visiting rival Tigres on Saturday night at the Estadio Tecnologico. Aldo de Nigris (42′, 54′) scored both goals for the home side, which now occupies second place in the 2012 Clausura standings with 28 points. 

Santos only managed a 1-1 home draw against Estudiantes on Saturday, but with 30 points remained in first place. Carlos Darwin Quintero (69′) scored the Guerreros’ only goal.

CFU Club Championship to resume next week 

First round play in the CFU Club Championship continues next week, April 17-21, with Group 2 and Group 3 action.

All Group 2 games will be contested at Providence Stadium in Guyana between 2011/12 Champions League qualifier Alpha United (Guyana), Hubentut Fortuna (Curacao), Inter Moengotapoe (Suriname) and Milerock (Guyana).

Group 3 will be played in Haiti and is comprised of Victory SC (Haiti), Baltimore SC (Haiti), Centro Barber (Curacao) and Bayamon FC (Puerto Rico).

George Town FC of the Cayman Islands has already advanced to the second round of the competition by winning Group 1 last month.

The three, first-round group winners and best runner-up will advance to the second round, where they will be joined by four seeded teams in an eight-team, two-group second round.

The top two teams from each second-round group will qualify for a final group stage. Three teams from the Caribbean club championship will qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Canadian club championship to begin May 2 

The Montreal Impact will face three-time defending champion Toronto FC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps will play FC Edmonton in the Amway Canadian Championship.

Both series will begin Wednesday, May 2, with Montreal and Edmonton hosting the first legs with the second legs a week later in Toronto and Vancouver.

The winners will meet in a two-legged final May 16 and May 23 for a berth in next season’s CONCACAF Champions League.

 

Mexico to host 2013 U-20 Men’s Championship; Panama to host U-17s 

Mexico and Panama have been selected to host the final tournaments of the CONCACAF Under-20 and Under-17 Championships, respectively, next year.

The Under-20 Championship will be played February 18-March 2, 2013, in Puebla, Mexico.  The Estadio Cuauhtemoc and the newly-renovated Estadio Universitario Lobos BUAP will be the venues.

The top four teams will qualify for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

The Under-17 Championship will be played at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City and the Estadio Agustin Muquita Sánchez in La Chorrera, April 6-19, 2013.

The top four teams will qualify to the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

 

Futsal draw to be held Thursday 

On Thursday, the draw for the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship will take place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and will be conducted by Mario Monterrosa, the Central American Football Union General Secretary.

Host and defending champion Guatemala, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, St. Kitts & Nevis, USA and the winner of the Canada-El Salvador playoff will be drawn into two groups of four teams each.

The competition will take place July 2-8 at Guatemala City’s Domo Polideportivo.
