U.S. Soccer FederationFirst Post-Olympic Match to be Held in Abby Wambach’s Hometown at Sahlen’s Stadium

The U.S. Women’s National Team will face Costa Rica in its first post-London Olympics international friendly on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. The match, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The U.S.-Costa Rica matchup takes place in the hometown of star striker Abby Wambach, the second-leading scorer in the women’s game with 141 career international goals. She has scored three times in three matches so far at the 2012 London Olympics.

The USA qualified for the 2012 Olympic quarterfinal by virtue of a 3-0 victory against Colombia on Saturday, July 28, at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. The squad clinched Group G with nine points following the 1-0 win over Korea DPR on Tuesday and will now face New Zealand in the Quarterfinal round on Aug. 3 at St. James’ Park in Newcastle. 

The USA’s first match after the 2004 Olympics also took place in Rochester, a 4-3 victory against Iceland on Sept. 25 at Frontier Field. Wambach dazzled her hometown fans with the game’s first two goals and assisted a Mia Hamm tally.
