Toronto FC announced Tuesday that the club has acquired midfielder Michael Thomas from Sporting KC in exchange for the club’s second round draft pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

“Michael is a solid player who our coaches have had their eye on for some time,” said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. “He’s versatile and athletic and will be an important part of TFC for some years to come.”

Thomas, 25, has played in nine matches combined in league and U.S. Open Cup play for Sporting KC. He was originally drafted in the second round (19th overall) in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes. Following the draft, Thomas signed with Swedish Allsvenskan club Halmstads BK after a trial period. Thomas left the club and trialed with Ljungskile SK of Sweden. Following the trial he signed with the club for the remainder of the 2010 season. Sporting KC acquired Thomas’ rights from the San Jose Earthquakes and signed him on January 18, 2012.

Thomas played his entire collegiate career for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He started in 81 matches, scoring 19 goals and added 13 assists during his time with the Fighting Irish.
