META 2012 INVITES YOU TO CELEBRATE CANADAS EMERGING GENERATION OF ARTISTIC VISIONARIES META is an annual showcase of high caliber artworks created by graduating students in the New Media program at Ryerson Universitys School of Image Arts. This year, META 2012 will take place at Airship37, located in Torontos historic Distillery District, from March 29th 31st. META 2012 presents over a dozen artworks that seek to discover and redefine the creative possibilities offered by new media. User interaction is the key to the distinctive audience experience offered by the kinetic sculpture, game design, sound art and video installation works showcased at this years exhibition. Many of the artworks provide immersive, multi-sensory experience while others invite audience members to play or challenge them to problem-solve. All of the works approach the issue of how technology defines our era as an opportunity for creative exploration and intervention. In my sixteen years as a New Media professor, I believe that META stands head and shoulders above any art exhibition that I have attended – Lila Pine, Program Director of Image Arts: New Media. Taking to heart the promise of the all-encompassing nature of user interaction in new media, this years curatorial team has been inspired to undertake the creation of the first-ever accessible META event. By eliminating the obstacles that impose restrictions upon the involvement of individuals with visual, physical or hearing disabilities, we not only aspire to broaden the demographic of New Media, but also send a public message about making access a vital priority in the arts.
