Screening of 1978 Film Stony Island With Director Andrew Davis

Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood, CA)

"Stony Island"

Take part in a discussion with director Andrew Davis after watching his brilliant snapshot of the 1970s Chicago music scene. Featuring a host of music legends including saxophonists Gene "Daddy G" Barge and George Englund, jazz poet Oscar Brown Jr., Chess session guitarist Phil Upchurch and future Bangles star Susanna Hoffs, the film is a coming of age story about two friends growing up in the South Side neighborhood of Stony Island. 18-year-old guitar player Richie Bloom (Richard Davis) and his silky-voiced best friend Kevin (Edward "Stoney" Robinson) have dreams of making it big with their R&B group until tragedy strikes, forcing the boys to use their wits to claw their way up the thorny music business ladder. Stony Island includes cinematography by Tak Fujimoto (Badlands), a score by David Matthews and also stars Rae Dawn Chong and Dennis Franz. Learn more…
