The Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena, CA)

"Jitney"

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson’s acclaimed first work, Jitney, is the 1970s installment of his renowned cycle of 10 plays depicting African-American life in the 20th century. Jitney tells the stories of a ragtag group of men working in a Pittsburgh jitney cab company where tensions run high as the city threatens to shut it down. The station owner Becker has other things to worry about, as his son Booster is about to be released from prison after 20 years. Other characters include the motor-mouthed Turnbo who meddles in the lives of his fellow drivers; Youngblood, a Vietnam War veteran and his girlfriend Rena; and Shealy, a numbers-taker who uses the station as his base. Award-winning actor Charlie Robinson (Night Court) leads the cast in a re-mount of the production that originated at South Coast Repertory. Jitney won the 2000-2001 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play.
