The Porters of Hellsgate present The Merry Wives of Windsor, Shakespeare’s only play to deal with contemporary middle class life. This version of the classic farce pays tribute to the screwball comedies of the 1930s, transforming the Elizabethan comedy to a raucous bar romp. This whimsical tale centers around lusty Sir John Falstaff, who arrives in the town of Windsor short on funds and attempts to seduce two local wives in order to set himself up comfortably. The “merry wives” see right through his plan and lead him on a boisterous chase full of pranks. Full of broad comedy and ribald humor, Merry Wives of Windsor is one of the most accessible of Shakespeare’s plays from a modern viewpoint.
