The Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center (Santa Monica, CA)
The fascinating true story of Jiang Ching, a stage and film actress of the 1930s who became the wife of Mao Tsedong and a powerful figure in China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s, comes to the stage in an exclusive American preview. Written by Hong Kong’s first female film director Cecile Tang Shu Shuen and starring an English-speaking cast, the show debuts 16 musical numbers — the result of an unprecedented collaboration between five Chinese and American composers. I, Ching highlights both the comic and dramatic moments of Madame Mao’s life as it traces her path from the glamorous Shanghai of the ’30s, to Mao’s revolutionary base in rural Yen’an to her rise to ultimate power in the ’60s, aided by her famed Gang of Four.
