City Garage at Bergamot Station, Building T1 (Santa Monica, CA)

Award-winning playwright Charles L. Mee has created a stunning new take on the Orestes myth for director Frédérique Michel and the company at City Garage. Euripides’ ancient Greek tragedy of crime piled on crime is redrawn in hauntingly familiar terms to a modern audience: political paralysis, meaningless wars and random acts of violence. Orestes is on trial along with his sister Electra, who is also his lover. They stand accused of the murder of their mother, the traitor Clytemnestra. Menelaus, their politically ambitious uncle, is too cowardly to intervene. Sentenced to death, the siblings turn terrorist. Watching over it all is the god Apollo, who sees the humans as his entertainment. He is amused by their absurd ambitions when all will end in death and emptiness for them. Greek tragedy meets edgy contemporary thought in this bold and original new work.
