New Shoes: An Evening of Original Dance From Four L.A. Choreographers
Highways Performance Space and Gallery (Santa Monica, CA)
New Shoes features fresh works by some of the Los Angeles area’s most exciting emerging and established choreographers, including Naked With Shoes, Rebecca Pappas, the Qualia Dance Theater and Lydia Zimmer. First up, Naked With Shoes’ Black Friday puts its neo-post-modern spin on stretching time and trying to find a bargain. Rebecca Pappas’ A dance concerning itself with history and memory (adciwham) is a duet performed by Genevieve Carson and Jesse Saler interested in unmooring, detaching from and confusing the past. Qualia Dance Theater’s Phantoms of Obsession is about a man’s manifestation of unreality presented through the female form. Finally, inspired by Yousuf Karsh’s 1956 portrait of Audrey Hepburn, Lydia Zimmer’s Portrait explores the boundaries of starlet life, translating this to movement by focusing on specific shape and form through improvisation.
