Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, CA)
Maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen is back at the baton for this special series of concerts, saluting his friend, musical collaborator and mentor, the great 20th-century Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski. These Los Angeles Philharmonic performances will also fill the gorgeous Disney Hall with the sounds of Beethoven, Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Salonen himself, aided by special guest singer Gerald Finley and pianist David Fray. The LA Phil’s famed music director from 1992 to 2009, Salonen leads this celebration of what would’ve been the 100th birthday of Lutoslawski, who wrote his Fanfare for Los Angeles Philharmonic in honor of the orchestra’s 75th anniversary. The symphony will perform that piece along with selections from Beethoven in the first concert. The second stars Canadian baritone Gerald Finley, who performs Lutoslawski’s vocal nocturne Les espaces du sommeil, and also finds Salonen conducting young French pianist Fray in Schumann’s romantic concerto, as well as his own work, Nyx.
