Samuel Goldwyn Theater (Beverly Hills, CA)
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the U.S. premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Ring. This silent feature film has been lovingly restored by the British Film Institute, as part of its ongoing effort to restore all nine surviving silent films of Alfred Hitchcock. This film is the only one of Hitchcock’s effort that was written as well as directed by the auteur. This romantic melodrama is set in the world of boxing, a world that fascinated Hitchcock. The title refers to both the boxing ring and the rings that represent the love triangle that entangles up-and-coming contender Jack “One Round” Sander. There is the wedding ring he gives his beloved Mabel, as well as the bracelet that is given to Mabel by Jack’s rival, Australian boxing champion Bob Corby. In true Hitchcock style, The Ring features a number of new techniques and visual tricks. For one scene, an entire fairground was constructed on the studio lot and populated with extras, allowing Hitchcock full reign to film from any angle and capture a realistic shot.
