Stephanie Visser has been painting and drawing most of her life. Growing up she continued to follow her passion through art classes and creative ventures.

“I was one of four girls born into a first generation immigrant family and my father, first born in the US was not exactly encouraging of an education in art,” she says. At the top of her class, she was awarded a national merit scholarship leaning towards music, mathematics or engineering at a state school. She was just eighteen. It was then that she informed her parents that she wanted to go to art school. “My parents were not actually delighted,” she continues…I walked away from the scholarship with exactly the kind of sureness really only known to an eighteen year old.”

Her parents warned that if she quit school, she would be on her own, without any further financial help for her education. “I did it anyway, she muses, “although I did make allowances for their wishes by getting my degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in design.”

She started her own business yet her love of art continued to call out to her. “I closed my business, came to California, and put myself back into school taking graduate classes. During that time I went through a divorce and had to go back to work to pay my bills. Today I work a full time job, manage a 16 unit apartment building in West Hollywood, and paint after work and on weekends in order to pay my bills and follow my dream of being a painter.”

Visser has been a member of TAG Gallery for five years now. “I have had a show every year for the past five years,” she says. In addition, she has competed in several international competitions where she has won awards, and participated in a number of group exhibitions.

When asked what she is trying to convey with her work, Stephanie explains, “I never fully understand the meaning of my work until I view it in total. Bringing the subconscious to conscious awareness comes out of my habitual internal  quest for truth and beauty. That search, expressed in previous works has continued, inexplicably. The opening reception for her current show will be held on December 1 st from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Also showing as part of the opening, are Lorraine Bubar and Peter Kempson.

There will be an artist talk on December 15th at 3:00 p.m. The exhibition will be on view from November 27th through December 22nd. http://www.stephanievisser.com
