Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal Citywalk (Universal City, CA)
Word up! Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend with this concert featuring sets from Cameo and The Ohio Players, two premier funk bands from the ’70s and early ’80s. Cameo has been lighting up the dance floor since 1974 with funk and soul hits including “Shake Your Pants,” “Keep It Hot,” “Attack Me with Your Love,” “Word Up” and “Candy.” Founding member Larry Blackmon still leads the band, who are expecting to release a new album this year. With several No. 1 singles to their credit (“Funky Worm,” “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster”), The Ohio Players scored several gold records in the Disco Era of the ’70s, and have kept the funk flag flying since with compilations and performances. The concert also includes L.T.D. (“Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again”), ’80s female R&B group Klymaxx, the S.O.S. Band and the Dazz Band (“Let It Whip”).
