Warner Grand Theatre (San Pedro, CA)
The haunting compositions of Philip Glass find particular resonance in The Fall of the House of Usher, his new opera now receiving its West Coast premiere at the Warner Grand Theater. The Long Beach Opera is staging this thrilling marriage of Glass’s genius with that of an earlier American master: Edgar Allan Poe. Faithful to Poe’s masterwork, the opera follows an unnamed narrator on his visit to an old friend, Roderick Usher, now stricken with a mysterious ailment in his family’s decaying mansion. What happens — or doesn’t happen — once the narrator arrives at the “House of Usher” has fascinated and repulsed audiences since the day it was written. That said, Poe’s tale grows even more compelling and horrific with the addition of Glass’s shimmering, suspenseful music. Come early to catch a pre-opera talk at 1:00pm.
