Miles Memorial Playhouse (Santa Monica, CA)
Mozart goes Miami Vice in a spirited new version of The Marriage of Figaro from Pacific Opera Project. Coming on the heels of its production of The Barber of Seville, the company continues to follow Figaro — but their take on the comic opera is set in 1980s Miami, where the villa of Cuban immigrant-turned-drug lord Almaviva turns out to house a tangled web of love affairs. Though married to Rosina, Almaviva pursues the fiance of his right-hand man, the wily Figaro, who does all he can to outwit his boss. Meanwhile, the lusty teenager Cherubino courts Rosina, among others — and that’s just the beginning of the romantic mobster mayhem. Sung in Italian with projected English supertitles, this Mozart opera is widely considered his finest and funniest.
