Ahmanson Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
After an acclaimed run on Broadway, Tracie Bennett turns in a tour-de-force performance as one of stage and screen’s most legendary stars in Peter Quilter’s scathingly funny musical drama based on the life of Judy Garland. Set in December 1968, the story unspools in a hotel room in London, where Garland is set to star in a series of desperately-needed comeback concerts. As she prepares with her young fiancé, Mickey Deans, and trusted pianist (2012 Tony-nominated Michael Cumpsty), she fights to tame her notorious inner demons through the sheer force of her monstrous talent and irrepressible wit. Shining in her starring role, Bennett belts out such Garland classics as “The Trolley Song,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “The Man That Got Away,” and of course, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” She’s also earned a cascade of critical kudos, including Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theater World Awards, along with a 2012 Tony nomination.
