Kirk Douglas Theatre (Culver City, CA)
Jennifer Haley’s The Nether explores the implications of our mass exodus from our “real lives” to the world of cyberspace. In the play, there’s an exciting new virtual wonderland that provides total online sensory immersion. You just log in, choose an identity and then vanish into a dizzying array of online realms while you indulge your every whim. It’s a world of complete freedom from any societal rules or expectations. When a young cyber-detective discovers a realm of hideous crimes being committed within this online world, she moves to interrogate its creator, a man called Papa. As the case deepens, she begins to question whether moral law can govern human connection. This winner of the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize is both a serpentine crime drama and a haunting sci-fi thriller that explores the darkest corners of our imagination and the consequences of living out our most private dreams.
