Hairspray: Tony-Winning Musical Bops Back to the ’60s
Canyon Theatre Guild Playhouse (Newhall, CA)
Plus-sized dreamer Tracy Turnblad becomes a dancer on a popular local TV show, transforming herself from a shunned outsider to a true teen celebrity, in this upbeat, uplifting production of the hit Broadway show. Then, the plucky heroine sets out to triumph over both snotty teen queens and racial segregation. Set in 1962 Baltimore and based on the movie by John Waters, Hairspray won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score, for such hit songs as “Welcome to the ’60s,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat” and “Good Morning Baltimore.” And then it was turned back into a popular 2007 movie, starring John Travolta and Nikki Blonsky. But there’s nothing like seeing the Mark Shaiman-scored musical live on stage.
