Smothers Theatre (Malibu, CA)
Presented as part of Pepperdine’s The Ascending Voice III: An International Symposium of Sacred A Cappella Music, Washington’s own Grammy Award-winning Sweet Honey in the Rock performs at Smothers Theatre. The vocal group’s unique and uplifting sound combines R&B, soul and gospel with rap, reggae, African chants, hip-hop and jazz improvisation. Creating unforgettable original music from the rich textures of African-American legacy and traditions, they’ve spent recent years collaborating with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and the National Symphony Orchestra, performing at the White House and singing around the world. Founded in 1973 by four members of the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey in the Rock now features six remarkable women, including founding members Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson, as well as sign language interpreter Shirley Childress Saxton.
