Friends of Alexandra Park present Alexandra Park Community Tree Planting Festival! A fun-filled event for the whole family! Saturday, April 20, 2013 Toronto, April 2, 2013 The Friends of Alexandra Park, with the kind support of Live Green Toronto and the Scadding Court Community Centre, are pleased to announce the first ever Community Tree Planting Festival in Alexandra Park on Saturday, April 20 from 10am to 4pm. This free festival is a fun-filled event for the whole family to celebrate and welcome new native edible trees to the park! Everyone is encouraged to attend this enjoyable day: food and refreshments are provided as well as the opportunity to help plant! Among the edible, native species being planted are native Chestnut, Serviceberry, and Redbud trees. The elusive and fascinating Paw Paw trees will also be planted, making it the first such grove in the city. And this is just the beginning of what Friends of Alexandra Park hope will be a series of community-led initiatives to invigorate this downtown 4.5 acre park. Fun for everyone on April 20 refreshments, games, tree planting! For those looking to get their hands dirty and help with the planting on April 20, there will opportunities to dig holes, prepare the soil and actually put the trees in the ground! There will also be roles for those not wanting to get quite that dirty, as well as games and activities for children of all ages. New picnic tables are ready for assembly and decoration. All ages and abilities are welcome. If planning to lend a digging hand, festival-goers are asked to bring a spade and gloves if they have them, though gloves and shovels (and soil, and trees!) will be provided. Food, coffee and refreshments are also provided but you may want to bring some extra snacks, your own coffee mug and a waterbottle – as well as your friends and neighbours! Volunteers Needed on April 19! If you cant make it out for the Tree Planting Festival (or even if you can), the Friends of Alexandra Park are also looking for volunteers to come to the park on Friday, April 19 between 12:00pm and 5:00pm to prepare soil for the following day. Alexandra Park is situated at the corner of Bathurst and Dundas Streets in downtown Toronto amongst a diversity of land-uses and neighbourhoods. New developments and the coming revitalization in the surrounding areas (including the Scadding Court Community Centre and the Sanderson Library) mean that the community needs Alexandra Park more than ever, and Alexandra Park needs the support of the community. Friends of Alexandra Park (FOAP) is a volunteer group that works together to promote and enhance the natural, physical and cultural aspects of Alexandra Park. It seeks to engage the community in growing a shared, native, edible tree population and generate awareness around the importance of trees and growing food. It encourages membership and participation of all those who are interested and who use the park. The Co-Chairs of Friends of Alexandra Park are Ariana Cancelli and Christie Pearson.
