Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA)
At a time when different cultures collide more than collaborate, one extraordinary band proves that the interaction of different traditions can be (literally) harmonious. Composed of all-star musicians from a wide array of backgrounds and religions, the group Common Chords mixes several genres, including rock, klezmer, jazz, bhangra, Indian, Sufi and qawwali. Their sound is enriched by several instruments ranging from the familiar, like the bass, accordion, sax and flute, to the exotic, like the tabla and the dhol. Led by famed Pakistani singer/guitarist Salman Ahmad (Junoon) and world-renowned klezmer violinist Yale Strom, the Common Chords head to the Skirball Cultural Center as part of the Skirball’s new concert series, “Journeys and Encounters.”
