The James Bridges Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
A gleefully twisted tale that riffs on the portrayal of nuns in Hollywood films, The Divine Sister is a heavenly comedy that’s so wickedly funny it probably deserves a smack on the wrist with a ruler. L.A. Theatre Works presents a live performance without sets or costumes to be recorded for public broadcast. It’s written by and stars Charles Busch, the warped mind behind cult hits like Die, Mommie, Die! and Psycho Beach Party. Busch plays a Mother Superior trying to deal with a young woman experiencing visions, a sensitive schoolboy, a mysterious nun from Berlin and a former suitor. At the same time, she’s trying to to build a new school for her Pittsburgh convent. With some of Busch’s freshest and funniest dialogue ever, and the talented Julie Halston and Emily Berg joining him in the cast, it’s impossible to keep a straight face at The Divine Sister.
