Lip Service: Queering the Musical Theatre Canon, curated by Gina Young, is part of Behold!, the fourth installment of Highways’ ongoing Queer Performance Series. What if Shakespeare’s Desdemona and Emilia were lovers, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream was actually a big gay sex romp? Or, if Guys and Dolls was a musical about butch/femme gender roles, and Fiddler on the Roof had queer anarchist leanings? Lip Service reimagines excerpts from musical theater and classic plays with a queer twist, ranging from cross-gendered casting to exploration of real (or imagined) lesbian subtext. It’s a cabaret-style evening of live music, dance and rewriting childhood classics to include a gay perspective.
