Richard Pryor: Two Classic Stand-Up Films Plus Guests
Aero Theatre (Santa Monica, CA)
Trailblazing stand-up comedian Richard Pryor was at his peak in the late ’70s when he captured his performances in a pair of classic live films. The first, Richard Pryor: Live in Concert, was made in 1979 and is, according to critic Pauline Kael, “probably the greatest of all recorded-performance films.” Pryor sets his incendiary sights on sex, drugs and racism with hilarious and thought-provoking results. Equally brilliant, his follow-up, Richard Pryor Live On the Sunset Strip, came after a nearly fatal drug episode and is one of Pryor’s most well-crafted sets. Between films, Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor, and producer David Permut will have a discussion with moderator by Larry Karaszewski.
