“Do Something” by William G. Prettie (Edmonton). Inspired by philosopher Noam Chomsky, Pretties paintings are multi-layered constructions of striking colour that incorporate objects and text, and blend unexpected materials including enamel, asphaltum and resins on aluminum panel. In his first Toronto exhibition, Prettie introduces text used as image and image as metaphor to refashion the way that one looks at familiar things. Many pieces are constructed with layers of almost mirror-like dark transparencies that allow the viewer to see themselves inside the piece. Do Something is a creative call to intellectual arms, with echoes of journalist Robert Fisks call Do not do nothing. A selection of sculpture will also be on display.
