Carousel Screening: Actress Shirley Jones in Person

An Oscar winner for Elmer Gantry and still plenty active as a TV guest star on shows like Raising Hope and Cougartown, Shirley Jones is still best known for her stint in the ’70s musical sitcom The Partridge Family. But it was her film roles in the musicals Oklahoma! and Carousel that made her a star. Jones is set to be on hand for this American Cinematheque screening of the 1956 Rodgers & Hammerstein classic Carousel, named the best musical of the 20th century by Time Magazine. It’s the dramatic story of a naïve young woman who falls for a brash carnival barker in a small New England town, setting off a series of heartbreaking events that ultimately lead to redemption. The movie features such memorable songs as “If I Loved You,” “June is Busting Out All Over” and the show-stopping “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Jones will sign her new memoir in the lobby before the film and participate in a discussion afterwards.
