The Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center (Los Angeles, CA)

This pair of one-act plays focuses on two groundbreaking African American women who made impacts in the entertainment industry. Barbara Morrison stars as Hattie McDaniel in Let Me In. McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar, when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Mammy in Gone With the Wind. Despite her valuable contribution to the film’s success, she was not invited to the Atlanta premiere and instead attended a party thrown by friends and family. In Black, Beautiful and Banned, Sylvia Boyd plays Marian Anderson, the first African American opera star. Set on Easter Sunday in 1939, the play follows her day leading up to her momentous concert at the Lincoln Memorial, when she performed in front of 75,000 people, with millions more listening on the radio. The two powerful plays are written and directed by Sharon L. Graine.
