Hollywood Bowl (Hollywood, CA)
Former Dudamel Fellow David Afkham makes his Hollywood Bowl debut, conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic and acclaimed British pianist Paul Lewis, in a program including works by Brahms and Beethoven. In fact, the LA Phil won a Grammy for their Brahms performance last year, and are sure to shine on the composer’s Tragic Overture, along with a stirring finale of his Symphony No. 2. The child of working-class parents in Liverpool, Paul Lewis’ strong natural talent led him to pursue a career in music, where he quickly became recognized as a great talent. He took home second prize at the World Piano Competition at the age of 22 and has since gone on to receive Gramophone Magazine awards for his recordings of the Beethoven piano sonatas. He’ll perform one of the maestro’s most theatrical pieces, Piano Concerto No. 3, under the stars at the Bowl. A fast-rising star at the age of 30, Afkham is the Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
