He is an award winning teacher, and an associate and founding editor of the open access medical journal Open Medicine. He directs a program that works in Ethiopia partners to train East Africa’s first emergency physicians. He is a member of Medecins Sans Frontieres, an organization for which he has worked as both a journalist and a physician. He was MSF’s first official blogger, and from this, he published a bestselling book about his experience as a field physician entitled, Six Months in Sudan. He is working on his second for DoubleDay, “Life on the Ground Floor: Meditations on Modern Medicine.”
