Viru: The Embassy of Freedom Director: Margit Kilumetsa Year: 2013 Length: 57 minutes Language: Estonian & Finnish w/ subtitles From the moment its doors opened in May, 1972, Tallinn’s Viru Hotel was the place to party, pick up a pair of black market jeans and find KGB agents shamelessly spying on its guests. The fascinating history of Estonia’s most iconic hotel comes to life in this documentary that recounts the building of the 500-room structure by a Finnish company, and how those who worked in the hotel during its cold-war heyday – including a barman, manager, black market “entrepreneur,” tour guide, dancer and interior designer, found themselves at the epicenter of Estonian cultural and political life. Anthems of the Grand Old Man of Song Director: lle un Year: 2008 Length:56 minutes Language: Estonian w/ subtitles This film examines the life of Gustav Ernesaks, the great standard bearer of Estonian choral music. Was he the legendary father of song, a national hero who inspired Estonians to again become the masters of their own land, or was he a puppet of the Soviet Empire who created the anthem of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, wrote three songs dedicated to Stalin and enjoyed the full benefits of the so-called nomenklatura? Or was he an uncompromising musician who was able to create and propagate a globally unique choral culture and whose compositions will live on beyond time and politics? http://estdocs-oct22-2013-eorg.eventbrite.ca/
