This is largely the work of one man, Eduardo Pimentel. He is the president and Founder of the non-governmental, Cuban Yoga Association (CYA). When yoga was still unknown and unrecognized in Cuba, Eduardo pushed & succeeded against all odds to introduce yoga, build a community & certify other Cuban teachers from different provinces so that they may bring yoga to their towns. Eduardo Pimentel has trained more than 12,000 yoga practitioners while aiming to develop a prominent Vipassana community in Havana. In 1999, Pimentel and the International Association of Black Yoga Teachers (IABYT) facilitated an international yoga exchange between Cuba and United states. Yoga students and teachers alike, travelled to attend the successful “lifting the embargo on our hearts yoga and music” festival. He has educated government agencies, worked hand in hand with medical practitioners, has been featured on National Cuban television teaching the benefits of health and yoga. Eduardo has published a book, “Prana, Mantra and Kundalini Yoga”, and is currently working on a translation of the Bhagavad Gita. In addition to being featured in the Yoga Journal, he presented at their conference in Estes Park, Colorado in 2003. This trip led him to New York, Nashville, San Francisco and Oakland where he was the guest speaker at several Yoga conferences. He has worked and practiced with some of the greatest yogis such as Krishna Kaur and Deepak Chopra on their Havana visits. Pimentel is a humble man, known for his patience and sense of humor. He lightens every class with his joyful spirit and his endless knowledge and expertise. Professor Pimental has been teaching in his studio, Vidya Yoga, where he continues to give lectures, workshops and daily group and private yoga classes.
