Join Guest Curator Steve Loft and artist Alan Michelson on an exhibition tour of “Ghost Dance: Activism. Resistance. Art.” The tour is FREE and open to the public. No registration is required. “Ghost Dance: Activism. Resistance. Art.” presents photographs from the Black Star Collection with contemporary works by aboriginal artists to examine the role of the artist as activist, as chronicler and as provocateur in the ongoing struggle for indigenous rights and self-empowerment. On view until December 15, 2013, Ghost Dance: Activism. Resistance. Art. is a multimedia group exhibition featuring the work of Sonny Assu, Vernon Ah Kee, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Dana Claxton, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Alan Michelson, Theo Sims, Skawennati, and Jackson 2bears. Steve Loft is a Mohawk of the Six Nations with Jewish heritage. He is a curator, scholar, writer and media artist. Loft is a Trudeau National Visiting Fellow at Ryerson University in Toronto, and a Scholar in Residence at the Ryerson Image Centre, where he is continuing his research into indigenous art and aesthetics. Ghost Dance: Activism. Resistance. Art. is the culminating exhibition of his Trudeau Fellowship at Ryerson University. Alan Michelson is a Mohawk member of Six Nations of the Grand River and addresses North American geography, history, and identity in his multilayered, multimedia installations. His work has also been exhibited in several museums, including the Tang Museum, the New Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He is the recipient of several grants and awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship.
