Miles Playhouse (Santa Monica, CA)
The Memorandum centers on Josef Gross, a bewildered executive whose office has abruptly adopted a new “scientific” language that nobody understands. Now he must navigate a labyrinth of red tape while under constant surveillance in an effort to have an indecipherable memo translated. Written by legendary Czech playwright and revolutionary leader Václav Havel — who was the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic — The Memorandum skewered the absurdities of bureaucracy decades before cult films like Brazil and Office Space. This 1965 comedy is (unfortunately) still very timely and (fortunately) still very funny.
