110 in the Shade may not be as well known as many of the great American musicals, but it should be, because it’s a true winner. Based on N. Richard Nash’s acclaimed play The Rainmaker, the musical is set in a drought-stricken town in the American Southwest. Traveling con man Bill Starbuck convinces the local farmers that he can provide them with much-needed rain. Meanwhile, Starbuck’s arrival turns spinster Lizzie Curry’s life upside down as she becomes torn between the charismatic stranger and the divorced Sheriff File. 110 in the Shade composers Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones are best known for The Fantasticks, and their music adds beautiful and memorable songs to an already engaging story.
