Sierra Madre Playhouse (Sierra Madre, CA)
Gilbert and Sullivan’s last great comic opera The Gondoliers finds the great musical writing team at their cleverest and most playful. Set on the streets of Venice, an epic opening number launches the viewer into a fanciful tale of a young queen who arrives in the city to join her husband, the heir to the throne of Barataria. Unfortunately, she quickly realizes that he was mixed up with a gondolier’s son as a baby and now, no one can tell which is which. Both gondoliers are now ruling together and to make matters more complicated, have each married local girls. Gleefully skewering issues of social equality and the class system, The Gondoliers is a masterful showcase of Gilbert and Sullivan’s famed exuberance and wit.
