Based on the 1952 film starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds, the stage musical Singin’ in the Rain pays tribute both to the MGM movie musicals of the ’40s and the origins of talking movies. The zany, light-hearted romantic comedy is set in the days just after the success of the first talkie, The Jazz Singer, when Hollywood stars were literally scrambling to find their voice. Film studio executives find themselves scrambling to salvage the career of Lina Lamont, a silent picture star with an iron-clad contract — and a voice like a screech monkey. They finally decide to hire an aspiring actress to overdub Lina’s voice in an upcoming film. However, when the leading man falls in love with the voice-over girl, and the audience clamors for Lina herself to sing live, there’s plenty of hilarious trouble afoot! The upbeat and uplifting musical features exhilarating choreography set to the classic tunes that you know and love, including “Good Morning,” “Make ‘Em Laugh” and the title song.
