"La Colonie" & "L'ÃŽle des esclaves"

Take in a pair of one-act comedies by famed French playwright Pierre de Marivaux. La Colonie is a baroque satire set on an island where women have seized power from men. The play foreshadowed the feminist movements that agitated Europe two centuries later, despite its politically and sexually conservative ending. L’Île des esclaves is a delightful and disturbing mix of comedy and cruelty following the fates of four shipwreck survivors — two masters, two servants — who wash up on a strange island where their societal roles are reversed and they discover what it’s like when the boot is on the other foot. Both plays are performed in French without subtitles.
