Ruby Theatre at the Complex (Hollywood, CA)
Open Mike is a moving, hilarious, music-filled solo show about surviving growing up Texan, dancing at Chippendales, being a missionary, making it to Broadway, dying (twice), getting plastic surgery and getting cut out of plenty of movies. Mixing personal memoir, outrageous anecdotes, musical numbers and life philosophy, writer-performer Michael Cline (Dreamgirls, Broadway’s Me and My Girl) documents performing anywhere he could on his journey to Broadway — including gigs as a singing Dr Pepper can and a tap-dancing Mary Kay powderpuff cheerleader — while secretly undergoing chemotherapy and being treated for rare lesions. Along the way, Cline conveys his secret to his resilience (to keep moving is essential) and his life-affirming message that If he can survive and thrive despite his personal and professional hardships, so can you.
