In The Bear, a reclusive and wealthy young widow becomes embroiled in an argument with her landlord, a boorish man who comes to collect a debt — and their back-and-forth battle of the sexes ignites a spark that threatens to rage out of control. The Proposal centers around Lomov, who asks to marry the daughter of his next-door neighbor. After receiving his blessing, the daughter, Natalya, joins the two — and begins arguing the mundane with Lomov until he collapses from exhaustion. The Bet is a brilliantly crafted story about an attorney and a bank employee who concoct an intriguing bet with one another regarding whether life in prison is preferable to the death penalty.
