Hudson Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
A go-go dancer embarks on a brutal journey of self-exploration in David Rabe’s classic contemporary drama In the Boom Boom Room. It’s 1960s Philadelphia and our protagonist Chrissy has left behind an upbringing wrought with poverty and abuse to pursue her dreams of stardom. Instead, she finds herself working at Big Tom’s Boom Boom Room, where her troubled history leads her to seek guidance in the form of love and sex from a motley crew of twisted characters. Along the way, she encounters hard truths about racism, domestic abuse, homophobia, obsession and mental illness. Controversial and provocative when it premiered on Broadway in 1974, the edges of Rabe’s Tony-nominated play have only sharpened in the decades that have followed.
