Ford Amphitheatre (Hollywood, CA)
Cambodian psych-rock, Southeast Asian drum-n-bass and Khmer hip-hop might not be genres familiar on mainstream radio, but they’re all modern-day musical fusions that can trace their roots to Cambodia, an oft-forgotten country that you’ll sonically experience at the first Cambodian Music Festival. And you don’t have to be from Cambodia to appreciate the 14 artists slated to play this all-day outdoor celebration. Headliners Dengue Fever have been playing their cross-cultural psych-rock across Los Angeles for more than a decade and other acts like rapper Prach Ly, singer-songwriter Laura Mam and R&B singer Jay Chan blend traditional Cambodian music with recognizable contemporary sounds, updating a rich history of music and art that was obliterated in the late ’70s by the brutal Khmer Rouge.
