Inner-City Arts: The Rosenthal Theater (Los Angeles, CA)

"Spring Awakening"

Deaf West Theatre, in association with The Forest of Arden, reinvents the multiple Tony-winning musical about lost innocence and the struggles of youth with this immersive production performed simultaneously in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English. Featuring a cast of 25 deaf, hard of hearing and hearing actors and musicians, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers as they navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence and their budding sexuality. Based on an expressionist play that caused a scandal in 19th-century Germany, it’s a bold and touching musical that captures the timeless and turbulent experience of youth transitioning to adulthood. Punctuated by an electrifying and hauntingly beautiful rock score co-written by “Barely Breathing” pop mastermind Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening took Broadway by storm when it debuted, winning eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.
