Theatre Asylum Lab (Hollywood, CA)
In 1916, the generally good people of Erwin, Tennessee lynched an elephant. Hot on the heels of sold-out runs at the Hollywood Fringe Festival and The Encore Producers’ Awards series, Man’s Dominion uses this decidedly disturbing (and completely true) event to examine themes that include animal cruelty, race relations and religious intolerance. An incident that’s lost none of its resonance in the ensuing century, Mary — the 18 year old elephant and captive star of a traveling circus — killed her trainer and was subsequently sentenced to death by the citizens of Erwin, who saw her hung from a giant railroad crane. A one-man show, this shocking, poignant and powerful play finds actor Tim Powell giving voice to 10 different characters whose lives intersected with this horrific occasion — including clowns, ringmasters, a minister, a hunter and even both of the event’s victims: Mary and her trainer.
