The famed story of the princess and the pea comes to life on stage in the delightful Broadway musical Once Upon a Mattress. No one in the kingdom is permitted to marry until Prince Dauntless does — but when a suitable candidate finally arrives, his overprotective mother devises a secret test that the young princess must pass before she’ll allow them to wed. Of course, it’s hard to prepare when sleep is in such short supply, even on a stack of 20 mattresses. Will Princess Winnifred, the latest candidate, fall prey to the queen’s schemes, or will she prove more clever? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance features a score by Mary Rogers. The show, which brought Carol Burnett to fame when she starred in the original Broadway production, was nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award in 1960.
