Pianist Sean Chen

A charismatic rising star, pianist Sean Chen became the first American since 1997 to win a prize at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition when he took home the Crystal Award in 2013. The Huffington Post wrote of his “exceptional ability to connect with an audience combined with an easy virtuosity,” while The Plain Dealer raved about his “undeniable spark.” Chen tours internationally, playing with major symphony orchestras and in chamber and recital concerts. He’s released two recordings in the last year. The first is a live CD of his competition performances, featuring pieces by Brahms, Beethoven and Bartók, which Gramophone praised for its “ravishing tone.” This was followed by a studio album on the Steinway label with works by Scriabin and Ravel, including Chen’s own revelatory arrangement of Ravel’s La valse. An advocate of new music, Chen has collaborated with several composers to perform their works, including Michael Williams, Niccolo Athens, Michael Gilbertson and Reinaldo Moya.
